Here’s a harrowing and uplifting tale. Three Americans had spent more than five years as hostages of the FARC rebel group in the jungles of Colombia. Last week they were rescued in a daring mission. They carried with them a metal lock, a bullet and – a chess board made of cardboard. One of the captives had carved the pieces with a a broken machete. The game helped them survive. Just returned from the World Open in Philadelphia, where some of the best chess players around the country participated in a 9 round event.  Very exciting times.  I didn’t actually play in the tournament, but I did play in some side events and some unofficial games.

I can only say that I am really pumped up.  Very exciting chess.  I took a lot of photos and you will see some of them in the upcoming weeks.  For several reports please visit our good friends over at the Chessdrum.

The Chessdrum has both photos and games posted right now. Visit today.
